The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
